Our Management Program
The Village works to minimize stormwater pollution through public education, outreach, and practical household guidance that helps residents protect water quality.

Protecting local water resources
The Village of Central Square is committed to protecting water quality through responsible stormwater management. As a Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) community, the Village follows regulations designed to reduce runoff pollution and protect local waterways, groundwater, and stormwater systems.

Stormwater is rain or melted snow that does not soak into the ground. As it moves across rooftops, roads, driveways, and lawns, it can collect soil, chemicals, litter, and other pollutants.
The Village works to minimize stormwater pollution through public education, outreach, and practical household guidance that helps residents protect water quality.
Following the U.S. EPA Phase II Rule, the program addresses public education, community participation, construction runoff, illicit discharges, post-construction controls, and municipal operations.
Motor oil, pesticides, fertilizer, soil, pet waste, and litter can wash into storm drains. These materials can harm aquatic life and create risks for people and the environment.
Stormwater reaches local water bodies without treatment. Pollution can cause algae growth, oxygen depletion, habitat loss, and reduced opportunities for swimming, fishing, and recreation.
Know the difference
These systems serve different purposes. Understanding where water goes helps prevent harmful materials from entering local streams and waterways.
Collects rain and snowmelt from streets and other surfaces, then carries that water directly to local water bodies—usually without treatment.
Carries household and business wastewater to a treatment facility or septic system, where it is processed before being released.
